Chalk Mountains of Aktau. Sedimentary layers of various colors remain from the times when the waters of the ancient sea splashed in the Ili Basin. Canyons and gorges were formed in the modern era as a result of erosion. The Aktau Mountains are one of the largest paleontological sites with Cenozoic deposits, four of which are bone-bearing deposits of different ages, starting from the Eocene (about 50 million years) to the present day and one with plant imprints. As a result of excavations, numerous remains of ancient animals that lived in different geological eras (late Eocene, upper Oligocene, early Miocene, anthropogene) were discovered, such as marsh rhinoceroses - brontotherium, crocodiles, mollusks, turtles, giant rhinoceros, mastodons, deer. A fully preserved brontotherium skeleton and three skulls were discovered during joint Kazakh-American expeditionary work in 1995-97 and are the first most complete materials found in Kazakhstan. The age of the animals is estimated at 25-30 million years. Judging by the preserved remains of trunks, leaf imprints, the main vegetation here were xerophilic forests consisting of poplars - the ancestors of modern turangovye, oaks, tugai.

Volcanic mountains Katutau. Remains of lava. The name of these mountains is translated in different ways - gloomy, empty, dead. In ancient, immemorial times (240 million years ago) in these places there were volcanoes not inferior in size to such volcanoes as Vesuvius and Etna in Europe, Avachinsky in Kamchatka. They were located in the eastern and western parts of Katutau. On the 1st day we look at and walk along the Chalk Mountains, the Lava Mountains of Katutau and the 700-year-old Iva. After that we return to the village of Basshi, where we spend the night.

Singing Dune - Charyn Canyon "Valley of Castles" - Saty

The Singing Dune is a large sand dune located between two low mountain ranges, Bolshoi and Maly Kalkan. The dune begins to sing from the hum of the sand, when thousands of grains of sand rub against each other. Its length is about 3 km, the height of the sand mountain is 150 m. According to the topographic map, the height of the dune is 667.4 above sea level, and its name is Akkum-Kalkan. They say that it was formed due to the peculiarities of the wind rose. Along Ili, the wind blows most often in the east, and along the mountains - in the west. Therefore, the "sandbox" always remains in one place.
Charyn. Valley of Castles. We can confidently say about the "Valley of Castles" that this is the most popular route among Intourists. And in all of Kazakhstan too. In all guidebooks and guidebooks on Kazakhstan, it is in the first rows. The popularity is caused by the obvious consequence that it is really quite a unique and unusual place, and there are few places in the world where there is something similar. Not without reason, the Charyn Canyon is called the younger brother of the Grand Canyon (located on the Colorado Plateau, Arizona, USA) or a smaller copy of it. It differs in size, but not in beauty. The bizarre forms carved by time, fascinate the eye with their grace, confirming the idea that the best artist is nature itself. The Charyn Canyon is located on the spurs of the Tien Shan, adjacent to the nearby border of China. Archaeologists determine the age of the canyon at 12 million years. Its total length is 154 kilometers along the Charyn River. The Charyn Canyon is composed of sedimentary rocks. The height of the mountains themselves (bizarre shapes) has a gradation from 150 to 300 m. The canyon is located in the depths, cut into the former bottom of the lake. The most visited and interesting place "Valley of Castles" is 2 km long, and the width is from 20 to 80 m. This amazing natural monument is included in the GNPP (State National Nature Park), formed on February 23, 2004. Due to the diversity of the landscape, a variety of flora and fauna typical for desert areas prevails here. Namely, on the territory of the Charyn Canyon, about 1,500 species of plants grow, 17 of which are listed in the Red Book of Kazakhstan and 62 species of mammals, 103 species of nesting birds and 25 species of reptiles. Kolsay lakes 1-2

Here we have reached the mountainous part, where we will devote the whole day to the beautiful mountain lake Kolsay. Today we will take a break from the road and enjoy nature. If the group is athletic, then we will go on a trek to the 2nd (middle) lake Kolsay. The path will take 16 km there and back. For those who find this a difficult hike, for an additional fee you can go to the 2nd lake on horseback. And if you do not want to go to the middle lake at all, then there is something to do on the first one. Ride boats or catamarans on the lake, go to the main photo points and visit the cave (adit).

Saty village – Lake Kaindy – Saty village – Almaty

Lake Kaindy was formed quite recently, namely in 1911, during a devastating earthquake. Lake Kaindy is small, about 400 m long, about 21 m deep. The lake is located at an altitude of 1,670 m above sea level, surrounded by coniferous spruce trees.
After breakfast, we leave for the lake, spend 2-3 hours there, return for lunch to the guest house and leave back to the city of Almaty. We will be there in the evening.

1.5 h (10:30 - 12:00). Walk and photo on the Dune
1 hour (12:00 - 13:00). Transfer to the village of Basshi
30 m (13:00 - 13:30) Lunch at the hotel (guest house)
3 h (13:30 – 16:30). Transfer to Charyn Canyon “Valley of Castles”
2 h (16:30 - 18:30) Walk along the main trail in the Valley of Castles and panoramic points
1.5 h (18:30 - 20:00). Transfer to the village of Saty. Check-in at the guest house. Dinner, free time.
