General information about the route
Most weekend tours and excursions to Charyn take place in the famous Valley of Castles. The main flow of group tourists is taken there. But Charyn is not limited to this location. The Charyn Canyon is large, its area is 154 square kilometers. In addition to the Valley of Castles, there are 3 more main locations, which are also unique. Each canyon is unusual and has its own unique archaeological structure. In this tour, we will visit all the locations in 2 days. Some of them can only be reached by a four-wheel drive vehicle with increased cross-country ability, so bus tours do not include these locations. Overnight in tents will give us the opportunity to retire with nature and watch the night starry sky. Dawn and sunset on Charyn are unusually beautiful.
Almaty - Charyn Canyon Valley of Castles - Moon Canyon (Yellow Canyon)
Day 1. The Valley of Castles is the most popular and, accordingly, beautiful canyon. It got its name for a reason, the bizarre shapes of the canyon justify it. We will see various forms of the canyon, reminiscent of Castles, everyone can see something of their own in these sculptures created by nature. We will admire the panoramic views from the height of the canyon, after which we will go down to the stormy Charyn River, observing the canyon from a different angle along the way. Down by the river we will rest in the shade of the trees. Now there is an equipped eco-camp here, where you can eat in a cafe, relax in the gazebos, meet and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of nomadic people, visiting a yurt.
The Moon (in Kazakh – Uzunbulak) Canyon is made of clay. Its shape and composition are very different from the famous Valley of Castles Canyon. It is a wilder place, there are usually few people here, and sometimes there are none at all. The Yellow Canyon has excellent potential for walking and exploring. There are many options for excellent hiking. The canyon is called both Yellow (the color scheme matches) and Moon (at night, with a full moon, the canyon acquires magical lighting). In the absence of the moon and a clear sky, myriads of stars are visible at night, as well as a distinct Milky Way.
Moon Canyon (Yellow Canyon) – Bestamak Canyon – Temirlik Canyon – Chundzha – Almaty
Day 2. Bestamak Canyon. A gorge between the Temirlik River Canyon and the Valley of Castles. The length of the valley is approximately 6 kilometers. The exact meaning of the name of the Bestamak Canyon is difficult to translate. It is somehow connected with the color of this canyon. In Kazakh, bes means five, Tamak means dish, i.e. five dishes. So the color scheme of the canyon consists of five colors. In addition, in the canyon you can see various sculptures that were formed as a result of erosion. On the eastern slopes, the sculpture of a large "Teapot" stands out. The Bestamak Canyon is very impressive due to its contrasting color.
Temirlik Canyon. Temirlik Canyons are located not far from Charyn. About 220 km from Almaty. Temirlik is not as popular as the "Valley of Castles", but this is its charm. Less trodden paths and roads will allow you to fully immerse yourself in the wild conditions and enjoy the silence and beauty of this canyon. Here you can find vegetation and set up a camp in the shade of trees. The flora and fauna of this area is quite diverse. The river valley is covered with thickets of willow, oleaster, barberry, chingil and tamarisk. Animals include: fox, corsac, hare, mountain goat, weasel, ermine, jerboa, stone marten.
Trip Timing
- 1 day
- 3 hours (8:00-11:00). Transfer to Charyn Canyon.
- 1 hour (11:00-12:00). Descent along the “Valley of Castles” canyon to the Charyn River.
- 1 hour (12:00-12:30). Ascent to the panoramic point.
- 1 hour (12:30-13:30). Return to the car.
- 1 hour (13:30-14:30). Lunch.
- 1 hour (14:30-15:30). Transfer to the Moon Canyon.
- 1.5 h (15:30-17:00). Walk along the rocky canyon.
- 17:00-19:00. Setting up camp, dinner.
- 19:00-20:00. Optional – climb to the panoramic point. Photo of the Moon Canyon at sunset.
- 2 day
- 6:30-8:00. Wake up, breakfast.
- 1.5 hours (8:00-9:30). Walk along the eastern branch of the canyon and visit the cave.
- 1 hour (9:30-10:30). Gathering.
- 1 hour (10:30-11:30). Transfer to Bestamak Canyon.
- 1 hour (11:30-12:30). Descent along the canyon to the Charyn River.
- 1 hour (12:30-13:30). Rest and lunch.
- 1 hour (13:30-14:30). Return to the car.
- 30 min (14:30-15:00). Transfer to Temirlik Canyon.
- 1 hour (15:00-16:00). Short walk. Photo of the canyon.
- 4 hours (16:00-20:00). Return to Almaty.

What to take with you on a trip
*Not necessarily! Recommended clothing if the trip includes trekking. But even on regular trips, it will be more comfortable in mountain clothing. Otherwise, you can look at the list and understand what you need to take, you can replace it with simple things.
