The Charyn Canyon got its name from the Charyn River, which flows along its bottom. The Yellow (or Moon) Canyon is located 200 km east of Almaty between the Kuluktau Mountains and the Charyn River. This natural monument is part of the Charyn National Park, established in 2004. One of the most popular tourist destinations in Kazakhstan. The Charyn Canyon amazes visitors with its grandeur and bizarre shapes. The incredibly beautiful landscape excites the mind.

It is a wilder place, there are usually few people here, and sometimes there are none at all. Yellow Canyon has great potential for walking and exploring. There are many options for excellent hiking.
The canyon is called both Yellow (the color scheme matches) and Lunar (at night, under a full moon, the canyon acquires a magical light). The Kazakh name is Uzun-Bulak. In the absence of the moon and a clear sky, myriads of stars are visible at night, as well as a distinct Milky Way.
Return to Almaty
After we have seen everything, walked along the lunar canyon, and around 15:30 we will begin our journey back to the city of Almaty.
Useful information
On the way to the canyon we pass the market (bazaar) in the village of Baiseit. There you can always buy food, vegetables, fruits, snacks for the road. Or stop at a cafe.
Trip Timing
- 1 day
- 3 hours (8:00-11:00). Transfer Almaty-Moon Canyon.
- 1.5 h (11:00-12:30). Walk along the eastern branch of the canyon and visit to the cave.
- 1 hour (12:30-13:30). Hike to the panoramic point.
- 30 min (13:30-14:00). Descent to the Charyn River through a narrow rocky gorge.
- 1 hour (14:00-15:00). Rest near the river, snack.
- 30 min (15:00-15:30). Return to the car.
- 3 h (15:30-18:30). Return to Almaty.
- You can add the location Valley of Castles +15,000 tenge per car.
