The Altyn-Emel National Park is located northeast of the Kapchagay Reservoir between the Ili River and the Dzungarian Alatau Mountains. It has an unusual and diverse landscape that will not leave visitors indifferent. The unique Lava and Chalk Mountains, as well as the singing dune, will surprise you with their sound and give you unforgettable memories of these places.

This place is also one of the famous and popular places to visit in the Almaty region. Altyn-Emel is a national park with a large territory. One of the main purposes is to preserve biodiversity, mainly tracking is carried out for kulans, argali and gazelles. Hunting is strictly prohibited. Local rangers and guides strictly monitor this. Many endangered species live on the territory of the national park. An experiment on the reintroduction of Przewalski's horse is being conducted in the national park. The results, unfortunately, are not encouraging, this species of animals does not survive in those conditions. But we are more interested in Altyn-Emel from a tourist point of view, and to see what is there. Although it should be mentioned that the spectacle is infinitely beautiful when early in the morning or in the rays of sunset, kulans and gazelles run at an incredibly high speed across vast expanses. So, there are several main attractions in Altyn-Emel that we will visit on the first day:

700-year-old Willow. This is a very large tree, having such a solid age. There in the shade of the trees we will have a hearty lunch at an equipped campsite, after which we will continue our journey in the direction of the lava mountains - Katutau.

Katutau is translated from Kazakh as lava mountains. Many millions of years ago, a volcano erupted here and pieces frozen in time remained everywhere on the territory. The most interesting form has a large piece of solidified magma. We will drive up to it and study it, taking photos. Then we will go to the Chalk Mountains, where we will thoroughly walk for several hours before sunset.

Chalk Mountains. Getting to Aktau (Chalk Mountains), the mind draws a picture of another dimension. Incredibly beautiful landscapes and colors plunge the mind into contemplative delight. We will walk around these places, hiking through gorges and panoramic points, spending several hours on this. There is something to see and where to walk in the Chalk Mountains. Closer to the evening we will go back to the village of Basshi for an overnight stay in a guest house / hotel.

Stone steles Oshaktas – Spring of Chokan Valikhanov – Singing Dune – Basshi – Almaty

On the second day, after a hearty breakfast, we will go to the Singing Dune. On the way, we will stop and look at the stone "Oshaktas Steles". The Singing Dune is a mountain of light-colored sand, up to 3 km long and 150 m high. The dune is located in the corridor between the ridges of the Dzungarian Alatau - Bolshoi and Maly Kalkan on the territory of the Altyn-Emel National Park in the Almaty region. The Singing Dune is a natural phenomenon, famous for the fact that in dry weather the sands make a sound similar to the melody of a ringing organ. Here we will take a thorough walk, after which we will return to the village, have lunch and go back to the city of Almaty.

Trip Timing

4 hours (7:00 – 11:00). Transfer Almaty-Basshi settlement (park office).
0.5 h (11:00 – 11:30). Registration of a pass.
1 hour (11:30 – 12:30). Transfer to the 700-year-old Willow.
1 hour (12:30 – 13:30). Lunch, rest near the willow at the Kosbastau cordon.
1 hour (13:30 – 14:30). Transfer to the Katutau Mountains.
30 min (14:30 – 15:00). Walk to the ancient lava and photos.
30 min (15:00 – 15:30). Transfer to the Aktau Mountains (Chalk Mountains).
2.5 h (15:30 – 18:00). Walking tour of the Aktau mountains.
1.5 h (18:00 – 19:30). Transfer to the village of Basshi to the hotel/guest house
Dinner, free time.

1 hour (8:00 – 9:00). Wake up, breakfast.
1.5 h (9:00 – 10:30). Transfer to the Singing Dune. On the way, the Oshaktas stele and the Chokan Valikhanov spring.
1.5 hours (10:30 – 12:00). Walk along Barkhan.
1 hour (12:00 – 13:00). Return to Basshi.
1 hour (13:00 – 14:00). Dinner.
4 – 5 h (14:00 – 19/20:00). Return to Almaty.
