Diversity of landscape
The Altyn-Emel National Park is located northeast of the Kapchagay Reservoir between the Ili River and the Dzungarian Alatau Mountains. It has an unusual and diverse landscape that will not leave visitors indifferent. The unique Lava and Chalk Mountains, as well as the singing dune, will surprise you with their sound and give you unforgettable memories of these places.
Lava Mountains
Katutau is translated from Kazakh as lava mountains. Many millions of years ago, a volcano erupted here and pieces frozen in time remained everywhere on the territory. The most interesting form has a large piece of solidified magma. We will drive up to it and study it, taking photos.
Singing Dune
The Singing Dune is a light-colored sand mountain, up to 3 km long and 150 m high. The dune is located in the corridor between the ridges of the Dzungarian Alatau - Bolshoi and Maly Kalkan. The Singing Dune is a natural phenomenon, famous for the fact that in dry weather the sands produce a sound similar to the melody of a ringing organ.

This place is also one of the famous and popular places to visit in the Almaty region. Altyn-Emel is a national park with a large territory. One of the main purposes is to preserve biodiversity, mainly tracking is carried out for kulans, argali and gazelles. Hunting is strictly prohibited. Local rangers and guides strictly monitor this. Many endangered species live on the territory of the national park. An experiment is being conducted in the national park to reintroduce the Przewalski horse. The results, unfortunately, are not encouraging, this species of animal does not take root in those conditions. But we are more interested in Altyn-Emel from a tourist point of view, and to see what is there. Although it should be mentioned that the spectacle is infinitely beautiful when early in the morning or in the rays of the setting sun, kulans and gazelles run at an incredibly high speed across vast expanses. So, there are several main attractions in Altyn-Emel: Chalk Mountains (Aktau), Lava Mountains (Katutau), 700-year-old Willow and Singing Dune. We will visit them all and walk a little. It is preferable to take this tour for 2 days, but if this is not possible, then it is possible in a day, but you need to be prepared for long journeys.
Trip Timing
- 1 day
- 4 hours (5:00 - 9:00). Transfer Almaty - Basshi village (park office). Stop at a gas station for breakfast/coffee.
- 0.5 h (9:00 - 9:30). Registration of passes for the group.
- 1 hour (9:30-10:30). Transfer to the 700-year-old Willow.
- 0.5 h (10:30 - 11:00). Photos, rest.
- 1.5 h (11:00 - 12:30). Transfer to the Chalk Mountains of Aktau.
- 0.5 h (12:30 - 13:00). Lunch in the gazebo (take away food).
- 1 hour (13:00-14:00). Short walk. Photos.
- 1 hour (14:00 - 15:00). Transfer to the Katutau Lava Mountains.
- 0.5 h (15:00 - 15:30). Walk, photo of a solidified piece of Lava.
- 1.5 h (15:30 - 17:00). Transfer to the Singing Dune (Oshaktas and Rodnik steles along the way).
- 1 hour (17:00 - 18:00). Time on the Barkhan. Photo.
- 1 hour (18:00 - 19:00). Return to Basshi.
- 4 hours (19:00 - 23:00). Return to Almaty.
