Beautiful gorge
The Bayankol Gorge is one of the most picturesque and inaccessible places in the Zailiysky Alatau, located in the southeast of Kazakhstan, in the Almaty region, near the border with China. The Bayankol Valley is located in the upper reaches of the Bayankol River, which originates from the glaciers of the Central Tien Shan, at the foot of Khan Tengri Peak (7,010 m) and Pobeda Peak (7,439 m), among the highest peaks in the region.

Climbing Astana Peak 4555
Astana Peak (4,555 m) is a slender and rugged peak in the Central Tien Shan. It rises above the moraines and glaciers of the gorge, offering a view of the majestic Khan Tengri massif. The pure lines of the cliffs and snow create an atmosphere of strength and the tranquil wildness of the high mountains.

Team
We are a team united by a love of heights and a vibrant spirit of adventure. In the mountains, we move as one: supporting each other, sharing the journey, the emotions, and the peaks we discover. Here, everyone matters, and our shared energy makes the route easier, more vibrant, and more fulfilling. Together, we create an atmosphere of trust, warmth, and true mountain camaraderie.
Route plan
General route plan
Almaty – Kegen – Bayankol outpost – Zharkulak gold mine – Sliyanie camp 3250m – Acclimatization hike to the Chinese pass 4100m – Climbing Astana peak 4555m – Sliyanie 3250m – Zharkulak mine (10 km) – Almaty.
Almaty – Kegen – Bayankol outpost – Zharkulak gold mine – Sliyanie camp 3250m.
Today, we'll have a long drive from Almaty in an SUV, after which we'll head to the base camp at Sliyanie. There's an option (for an additional fee) to skip the heavy backpack and hire a horse to carry our main load, leaving us to travel light. The climb is easy but long—10 km. The elevation gain is gradual, and there's a chance of fording the river (it's small and shallow), so it's best to bring flip-flops. The condition of the river tributaries depends on the time of year and the heat, which means melting glaciers.
Acclimatization hike to the Chinese pass 4100m.
On this day, we need to acclimatize and hike to or toward the Chinese Pass. We need to gain altitude and descend back to camp so our bodies can adapt to the altitude for the subsequent ascent to Astana Peak (Krugozor).
Climbing Astana peak 4555m.
On this day, we will climb Astana Peak (4555m Krugozor), which offers stunning panoramic views of the snowy mountains around.
Confluence 3250m – Zharkulak Mine (10 km).
We go down to the car and return to the city of Almaty.
More about the route
The Bayankol Gorge is one of the most picturesque and inaccessible places in the Zailiysky Alatau, located in southeastern Kazakhstan, in the Almaty Region, near the border with China. The Bayankol Valley lies in the upper reaches of the Bayankol River, which originates from the glaciers of the Central Tien Shan, at the foot of Khan-Tengri Peak (7,010 m) and Pobeda Peak (7,439 m), some of the highest peaks in the region.
The gorge is located in the Kegen District of the Almaty Region. The gorge’s landscape is striking in its contrasts: from alpine meadows and coniferous forests in the lower reaches to glaciers and rocky peaks higher up. The best time to visit is from June to September (ideally July-August), when the road is passable and the weather is more stable. To visit the border zone, you need permission from the Kazakhstan Border Service, as the gorge is located close to the border with China.
Required: Bring your original documents (ID card or passport).
