The Charyn Canyon got its name from the Charyn River, which flows along its bottom. Charyn is often called a smaller copy of the Grand Canyon, which is located in the United States, but tourists who have been to both places note the uniqueness of our canyon. The Charyn Canyon amazes visitors with its grandeur and bizarre shapes.
Walking through the canyon
Arriving at the canyon, we will walk down along its most beautiful part called the “Valley of Castles”. The name is justified because the view really presents a unique picture. The architecture and forms combined with the rich history of the canyon immerse us in a state of deep contemplation and admiration. After a short descent (about 2-3 km.), we will come to the turbulent Charyn River.

The Charyn Canyon got its name from the Charyn River, which flows along its bottom. It is located almost two hundred kilometers from the city of Almaty, near the border with China. This natural monument is part of the Charyn National Park, established in 2004. One of the most popular tourist destinations in Kazakhstan. It is often called a miniature copy of the Grand Canyon, located in the United States, but tourists who have been to both places note the uniqueness of our canyon. The Charyn Canyon amazes visitors with its grandeur and bizarre forms. The incredibly beautiful landscape excites the mind.
Arriving at the canyon, we will walk down along its most beautiful part called the “Valley of Castles”. The name is justified because the view really presents a unique picture. The architecture and forms combined with the rich history of the canyon immerse us in a state of deep contemplation and admiration. After a short descent (about 2-3 km.), we will come to the turbulent Charyn River. In the recent past, this was a secluded place among growing trees, where you could hide in the shade of their crowns from the scorching summer sun. Now everything here is built for a comfortable pastime for tourists. Gazebos, bungalows, national yurts, where you can touch the life of nomads and learn the culture and customs of the Kazakhs. There is also a cafe on the territory where you can taste national cuisine. The tourist infrastructure here has now developed greatly, allowing tourists to relax in comfort.
After resting and having a snack, we will continue to explore the surroundings. We will go to a panoramic point, from where a beautiful view of the entire valley opens up. From above, we will see all the inherent grandeur and uniqueness of the canyon. Having studied and photographed all the main and interesting locations, we will return to the car and go back to the city.
Useful information
On the way to the canyon we pass the market (bazaar) in the village of Baiseit. There you can always buy food, vegetables, fruits, snacks for the road. Or stop at a cafe. The road to Charyn now takes less time than before. Most of the way goes along the Western Europe-Western China highway (New Silk Road). *There is an opportunity to go down and up to the canyon in an open eco-taxi (*not included in the tour price).
Trip Timing
- 1 day
- 3 hours (8:00-11:00). Transfer Almaty-Charyn canyon “Valley of Castles”.
- 1 hour (11:00-12:00). Descent to the Charyn River.
- 1 hour (12:00-13:00). Ascent to the panoramic point.
- 1.5 h (13:00-14:30). Return to the river. Rest, snack.
- 1 hour (14:30-15:30). Return to the car.
- 3 h (15:30-18:30). Return to Almaty.
*The time is approximate, minor adjustments are possible. The program can also be changed according to the client’s wishes.

*Not necessarily! Recommended clothing if the trip includes trekking. But even on regular trips, it will be more comfortable in mountain clothing. Otherwise, you can look at the list and understand what you need to take, you can replace it with simple things.
